RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY DATABASE - YEAR 1
New Markers for Prostate Cancer

Professor John Masters, Dr M Constance Parkinson, Dr Johnathan Cohen

Prostate Cancer Research Centre
Institute of Urology, University College London

This is the first in a series of grants by Prostate Research Campaign UK to support the construction of the database.

The Radical Prostatectomy Database aims to record as much clinical information as can be collected on a series of over 1000 men who have had a radical prostatectomy operation, starting with the pioneering work of Mr O'Donoghue in the late 1980s. This program, which will run over several years, is managed by Mr Jonathan Cohen and continues to be funded by Prostate Research Campaign UK

Whilst there is still uncertainty (in some quarters) about the merits of radical surgery over radiotherapy and other new treatments, this kind of clinical research is essential if the case for surgery is to be proven. In addition it provides a valuable insight into the possible negative aspects of surgery and their management.

The information from the Database is used by other researchers such as Mr Simon Bott in his research project - Outcome Following Radical Prostatectomy (Projects G2000/12 and G2002/13), which are also funded by Prostate Research Campaign UK

During the period of this grant, the continuing data from the patients was collected, organised and entered. Further reports on the database are available under projects G1999/04, G2001/12 and G2002/02.
