PROGRAMME CELL DEATH (APOPTOSIS) IN THE PROSTATE

Fouad K. Habib

Western General Hospital, University of Edinburgh

This research looked at the mechanisms whereby prostate cells die when their hormonal support is withdrawn.   In particular it looked at the role of a “protooncogene”, bcl-2, and the possibility of it preventing cell death (apoptosis) in advanced prostate cancer.

Although this may occur early in the condition the researchers felt that the increased apoptosis seen in advanced prostatic cancer is simply a function of increased cell turnover, and is not consequent to the presence, or absence, of bcl-2 or androgens.
